Urso announces: “Forward with nuclear fusion”

"Italy is behind, but Italian companies are ahead. In recent years they have continued to develop the nuclear sector where they could do so"

Full steam ahead on fusion towards the 2050 goal of achieving security and energy transition. But in the meantime, to take up the challenge of future technology, "we will bring investments from large chip multinationals, such as the Japanese ones", promises the Minister of Business and Made in Italy, Adolfo Urso, in an interview with “Messeggero”. Cop28 has relaunched an agreement to triple nuclear energy production, but Italy seems behind to meet the challenge: “Italy is behind, but Italian companies are ahead. In recent years they have continued to develop the nuclear sector where they could, i.e. abroad. I was recently in Slovakia where I inaugurated the third nuclear reactor of the Mochovce power plant, built by Enel, which will guarantee a production equal to 14 percent of what is needed by that country's electricity system. The group is also involved in the construction of the fourth reactor which should be operational in 2025 and which at that point will guarantee the autonomy of Slovakia. But it will also provide energy to export."

“Enel itself – adds the minister – is at the forefront on this front with Endesa in Spain. But also Ansaldo Nuclear has relaunched on this front in Romania with the Cernavoda power plant. However, the research work already started some time ago by Eni on fusion is crucial, the front on which Italy will accelerate as confirmed by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Not to mention the numerous companies involved in third-advanced and fourth-generation nuclear power." Urso explains that "our objective must be to accelerate nuclear fusion to achieve the objective in 2050. With the Minister of the Environment and Energy Security, Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, we agree on the development of a Plan that starts from training, research, and therefore the development of advanced, clean and safe nuclear technology. The third advanced generation, with small modular reactors, should be ready in 2030, while the fourth perhaps in 2040. More than ten years of planning is essential, which goes beyond even changes in government". In the meantime it is necessary to push hard on renewables. In this regard "the new regulation of the Energy Decree allows Enea to identify precise quality criteria on the basis of which to issue certificates for photovoltaic systems which also take into account sustainability and soil saving". Therefore the incentives will be distributed in the future also based on this quality rating: "We will reward the most efficient and sustainable ones", concludes Urso.
