In a rare gesture towards an Arab country with which Israel is officially at war, Netanyahu said: “Israel is ready to provide assistance to earthquake victims in Syria as well, and as a request has been received to help affected Syrians, we have made arrangements to lend our support.” The Israeli premier did not reveal the source of the request for aid to Syria. In a previous statement, the Israeli prime minister's office indicated that the State of Israel has accepted the request for help extended by the government of Turkey, instructing the authorities concerned to send medical and rescue teams. According to Israeli media reports, Syria sent its request to the State of Israel via Russia. According to reports from the newspaper "The Times of Israel", the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and other security bodies would be examining how to send aid to Syria.
