Spain: in 2022 there is a record for ticket sales on liberalized railway routes

The Madrid-Barcelona route recorded a 225 percent increase, while the one between the Spanish capital and Valencia by 325 percent

The first high-speed routes liberalized in Spain, on which several companies are already present, including the Italian one Iryo, which connect Madrid to Barcelona and Madrid to Valencia, saw a record increase last year.

According to a study conducted by Trainline, a travel booking platform based on its internal data, the Madrid-Barcelona route recorded a 225 percent increase, while the one between the Spanish capital and Valencia by 325 percent. “The last few months have seen major changes in the Spanish railway sector. The arrival of new competitors on the main routes and the consequent drop in prices have led to a completely new scenario for the train. The future of liberalization looks even more interesting to us,” said Andrea Saviane, director of Trainline for Spain.
