Everything is ready in the Italian military base of Centocelle, in Rome, for the 12th edition of "Shared Awareness and De-confliction in the Mediterranean” (Shade Med), the conference organized by the European air-naval military mission EuNavFor Med – “Irini” (which means “peace” in Greek) which this year will focus on the theme “Managing common challenges in the Mediterranean together”. The Mediterranean region has been the cradle of many civilizations, but today it faces complex challenges such as illicit trafficking of people, weapons and drugs, often without clear geographical borders. State and non-state actors operate in a nuanced manner, creating difficulties in finding solutions to pressing issues on the southern flank of Europe and NATO. In collaboration with the Maritime Command of NATO (Marcom), Shade Med aims to stimulate in-depth reflection on the dynamics and challenges that the region continues to face, acting as a crossroads between continents and witness to historical developments, trade exchanges, but also conflicts and regional instability.
The two-day conference, which will be hosted at the headquarters of Guidoni Palace, will feature high-level speakers, who will contribute to an in-depth discussion through a keynote panel and three thematic working groups. The main panel, entitled “EU and NATO after the invasion ofUkraine: addressing common challenges and strengthening crisis response, security and stability”, will analyze geopolitical crises and tensions in the region, proposing solutions for a shared vision of security and defense and underlining the importance of partner involvement.
ShadeMed it represents a crucial forum where representatives of numerous nations and organizations can meet to exchange views, facilitate mutual understanding and identify areas of potential cooperation. The conference focuses on challenges, conflict resolution and optimizing the coordination and deployment of military and civilian resources, as well as the integration of international efforts to ensure maximum efficiency in managing security and stability objectives in the Mediterranean. The event offers a unique opportunity to exchange information and experiences between diplomatic representatives, armed forces, coast guards, international organizations and more.
