Pope Francis' statements on the "cruelty" of the Russian military involved in the conflict in Ukraine were not "Christian" and do not help resolve the situation. This was stated by the Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, referring to the Pope's interview released a few days ago in the Jesuit magazine "America". “Pope Francis invites us to negotiations, but he also recently made an incomprehensible, not at all Christian statement, identifying two nationalities of the Russian Federation in a category from which cruelty can be expected during fighting,” Lavrov noted. The minister stressed that Russia, together with the Buryats and Chechens, two peoples who have been criticized by the pontiff, have expressed the hope that this will not happen again. According to Lavrov, these statements help "neither to resolve the conflict, nor to the authority of the Holy See".
