“Italy is committed to winning the challenge against drought and desertification, in a context of climate change that puts natural systems at risk, negatively affecting the country's growth prospects”. He states it in a note Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, Minister of the Environment and Energy Security, on the occasion of the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, established by the United Nations General Assembly with a resolution adopted in December 1994. According to the latest estimates, almost a third of the territory country (28 per cent, Ispra data) is degraded and at risk of desertification.

Drought, land degradation and desertification are correlated environmental problems, which can lead to emergency situations with severe impacts on the economy, the environment and agriculture. The climatic "trend" of recent years shows a growing rhythm and intensity of drought phenomena, also in the Mediterranean area and in our own country. “The government – explains Pichetto – has been working since it took office on the key issue of water management efficiency: it is strengthening the governance to combat drought phenomena, as a basis for new operational tools in the area and for the development of best practices. The Plan for Adaptation to Climate Change, now in the finishing straight, will update the framework of actions necessary to contain these phenomena. Italy – concludes Pichetto – is also intensifying its international cooperation, with important projects to combat desertification in Africa, particularly in the Sahel”.

The theme of the day the celebration of the day is in fact “Her Land. Her rights di lei ”,“ La terra di lei. Her Rights,” chosen to promote examples of success with women's and girls' contributions to sustainable soil management and mobilize support to advance land rights for women and girls around the world. In this regard, Minister Pichetto recalls "the historical and ever-present importance of women's commitment to caring for the earth: our own action on the African continent - he explains - intends to create the environmental conditions for new job opportunities aimed at women and young people ”. As noted by the executive secretary of the Convention against Desertification (UNCCD), Ibrahim Thiaw, “women are the main actors in global efforts to reduce and reverse land degradation. However, in the vast majority of countries, women have unequal and limited access to and control over land. We cannot achieve land degradation neutrality without gender equality, and we cannot exclude half the population from land management decisions because of their gender.”
