The High Court of Warri, in the Nigerian state of Delta, granted bail to 69 people who were arrested last month after a raid on what police described as a “gay wedding”. The local media reported this, explaining that over 200 people were arrested at the end of August in the police raid and that the 69 released had been formally accused of conducting and participating in a same-sex wedding ceremony.
Homosexuality, as well as same-sex marriage, is banned in Nigeria and can carry a sentence of up to 14 years in prison, ten for "complicity". The release of the detainees was granted upon payment of a bail of 500 thousand naira (520 pounds).
