There are 31 migrants rescued in Tunisia while the number of dead recovered at sea has risen to 15 after the shipwreck that occurred yesterday at dawn off the coast of the island of Djerba. This was stated to “Agenzia Nova” by the spokesperson of the National Guard, Hossam el Din al Jebabli, indicating that "the search for other missing persons continues and involves the Coast Guard, Civil Protection, the Navy and a National Guard helicopter". Yesterday morning, 12 bodies were recovered, including those of three minors, and 29 people were rescued, two of whom were foreigners.
The accident occurred at 5:15 a short distance from the coast of the island of Djerba and there were about sixty people on board the vessel. A dozen people are still missing. Yesterday, meeting with the Minister of the Interior, Khaled Nouri, and the Undersecretary of Homeland Security, Sofianne Bessadok, the head of state, Kais Saied, called the incident “tragic and strange,” explaining that the island is not a departure point for migrants heading to European shores. The president said that “some of the survivors who swam back to shore reported staying in furnished apartments rented for 1.200 dinars (355 euros) a week.”
According to the latest available data, there were about 60 irregular migrants on the boat, including women and children. The head of state called on the Ministry of the Interior to redouble its efforts to ensure that "citizens feel safe at night and day" and recommended that "security forces be present everywhere to ensure security at all times", reiterating the need to combat any criminal phenomenon. The meeting, according to a note from the Carthage Palace, seat of the Tunisian presidency, also reviewed the general security situation in the country.
