Middle East: Israeli forces intensify attacks on the Gaza Strip. The hospital ship Vulcano of the Italian Navy is operational

Following the expiration of the truce between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas The attacks by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on the Gaza Strip have intensified in both the northern and southern parts. This morning around 30 deaths were recorded in the areas of Khan Younis and Rafah, but according to the Qatari-owned pan-Arab broadcaster "Al Jazeera" the IDF also struck the Jabalia refugee camp, in the north of the Palestinian exclave, and other locations.

The IDF announced that since the beginning of the conflict they have conducted around 10 air strikes and discovered around 800 tunnels, destroying 500 of them. According to the IDF, these are passages used by Hamas to stock up on weapons and other "strategic resources". Last night the IDF announced that it had killed one of the commanders of the Shuja'iyya battalion, Wissam Farhat. In Israel, anti-missile sirens rang out in various locations across the country, while rocket launches from Syria continued today and shrapnel from an anti-tank missile fired from Lebanon injured some Israeli soldiers near the northern community of Beit Hillel.

The Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, held a meeting with his party, the Likud, during which he said that his country's efforts to free more hostages from the Gaza Strip are being accomplished through the military campaign. The prime minister added that the war cabinet was acting "swiftly but not recklessly" in its fighting decisions, and that attention remained focused on both the southern and northern fronts. As for the post-war scenario, an official confirmed the possibility of creating a buffer zone in the Gaza Strip, but also stated that the Jewish state's troops will not be deployed on the Palestinian side of the border. Meanwhile, a debate is underway in the Knesset (the Israeli parliament) preceding a vote on the updated war budget.

On the international level, the hospital ship has arrived at the port of Al Arish in Egypt Volcano of the Italian Navy, thanks to the joint effort of Farnesina, Defense and Intelligence, in close coordination between the Italian Embassy in Cairo and the Egyptian authorities. On board there are operating rooms and clinics in which civilian and military doctors from different countries will treat wounded civilians from the Gaza Strip. Finally, on the level of regional diplomacy, the Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran warned the European High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, about the risk of expansion into a regional war if the conflict will not stop. Furthermore, the foreign ministers of the Gulf countries are meeting in Doha, Qatar, ahead of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) summit scheduled for Tuesday 5 December to discuss the conflict.
