A file was opened in the prosecutor's office in Rome after the complaint of the parliamentarians Angelo Bonelli, Ilaria Cucchi e Nicola Fratoianni, on the death of migrants on the Calabrian coast on 26 February. A due act, that of the Capitoline magistrates, who will decide whether to send the file to the Crotone prosecutor's office for territorial jurisdiction. However, the prosecutor specified that it was not an investigation into the shipwreck: the complaint was registered as model 45, i.e. without suspects or hypotheses of crime. The Capitoline office is evaluating the document and possible sending to the Crotone prosecutor's office.
“A small boat overloaded especially in a sea that has forced two military vessels to turn back, can only be in danger. The event therefore had to be immediately classified as a Sar case”. This can be read in the report of the parliamentarians assisted by the lawyer Fabius Anselm.
The national co-spokesman of Green Europe and deputy of the Green and Left Alliance, Bonelli, explained during a press conference in front of the Chamber: "We want to know if the order has not gone out in the chain of command to let the patrol boats out of the Coast Guard, able to withstand and even face a sea even force 10 or 11 ".
"On the day of the tragedy in which 67 people died, including 14 children, the sea had force 4: as the commander of the Crotone Port Authority stated, people could have been saved", Bonelli underlined. "We ask the Public Prosecutor's Office to verify if there are any responsibilities, or if someone in the high-level chain of command has not picked up the phone to tell those patrol boats to go out and save lives," he concluded.
