The inhabitants of Japan today witness an astronomical event that has not occurred for 442 years: a total lunar eclipse, with the simultaneous occultation of the planet Uranus by the earth's satellite. In the Tokyo area, the lunar eclipse reached its peak a few minutes ago; the concealment of Uranus will be visible from Tokyo for approximately 40 minutes starting at 20:40 (local time). According to the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, the last complete and planetary lunar eclipse occurred in 1580, when the moon occulted Saturn. The next similar event will occur in 322 years, in 2344.
