It is in progress Germany the nationwide public transport strike. Started at midnight, the abstention from work will continue for the next 24 hours. The workers are mobilized by the Union of Service Sector Unions (Ver.di) and the Union of Railways and Transport (Evg), with the strike affecting buses, subways, trains and planes, as well as waterways . As reported by the television station "Zdf", the mobilization is part of the confrontation between trade unions and employers, engaged in collective bargaining. In particular, Ver.di is asking for salary increases of 10,5 percent for federal and municipal employees or at least 500 euros more per month for 12 months.
The public companies had previously submitted an offer that called for effective wage increases of 3 percent at the end of 2023 and 2 percent in mid-2024 over a 27-month period. Furthermore, an inflation compensation premium was envisaged in two installments of 1.500 and 1.000 euros. To discuss the issue, employers and trade unions will meet in Potsdam tomorrow, 27 March. Meanwhile, Kristian Loroch of the Evg declared that the workers' willingness to strike is "very high", their "enormous anger". For the general secretary of Ver.di, Frank Werneke, the public transport strike "should once again make it unequivocally clear to employers that employees clearly support" the demands of the unions.
