Eni, as part of Cop28, announces its membership of theOil&Gas Decarbonisation Accelerator, a platform launched by the COP28 presidency to demonstrate the concrete contribution of the Oil & Gas industry to the decarbonisation process, first of all through the commitment to zero emissions for its operational activities by 2050. The initiative - we read in a note - has three main objectives: to achieve zero net scope 1 and 2 emissions by or before 2050; aim to achieve the goal of zero methane emissions in the upstream sector by 2030; eliminate gas flaring from its ordinary activities by 2030. Membership also implies a commitment to periodically monitor and publish the results achieved and verified by an independent body on the basis of international standards.
Eni's decarbonisation strategy is already more than in line with these objectives, foreseeing zero net Scope 1 and 2 emissions in the upstream sector by 2030 and zero net Scope 1 and 2 emissions for all of Eni by 2035. Eni has also from the beginning included in its strategy a path to also reduce Scope 3 emissions and plans to reach zero net Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions by 2050. “We believe that this is one of the most relevant initiatives of COP28 in terms of commitments, is desired by the Presidency and we have actively supported it since its conception. These are objectives established with realism and pragmatism, which makes the path truly practicable and concrete”, commented Eni's CEO, Claudio Descalzi.
