Following the very scarce winter rainfall and despite the parsimonious management of the water available as early as December, this year the irrigation began with Lake Garda at an all-time low for the season. For this reason, a meeting was held between the Lombardy Region, the Veneto Region and the Autonomous Province of Trento, in the presence of representatives of the Garda Community, Aipo, Lombardy ANBI and the Mincio Consortium which brings together all the Mantuan irrigation users that use water from the lake Garda to irrigate. Massimo Sertori, Councilor for Local Authorities, Mountains, Energy Resources and Use of Water Resources and Alessandro Beduschi, Councilor for Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forests participated for the Lombardy Region. For the Veneto Region the councilor Gianpaolo Bottacin and for the Autonomous Province of Trento the councilor Roberto Failoni. The Mincio Consortium and Aipo have presented a program for the start of the irrigation season, albeit with reduced flow rates. The aim is to save an agricultural season which, if copious rainfall does not intervene, promises to be problematic.
“On this occasion – declared councilors Sertori, Beduschi, Bottacin and Failoni – we established that the trend of the irrigation season and lake levels will be subject to periodic monitoring. The common objective is to safeguard agriculture as much as possible, taking into consideration the needs of Lake Garda, in particular tourism and lake navigation”. "In fact - they remark - it is essential to find the right balance which, on the one hand supplies water to the priority agricultural needs but, on the other, safeguards an adequate height of the lake which guarantees navigability and all the needs of the important tourist sector". "The next meeting of the interregional control room for Garda - conclude the councilors Sertori, Beduschi, Bottacin and Failoni - is scheduled for next April 27 to take stock of the trend in the levels of the lake, in order to carry out a possible rescheduling of disbursements in the Mincio. It is in everyone's interest to reconcile the different needs that gravitate around Lake Garda and its waters".
