The India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor initiative (Imec), launched at the G20 summit in New Delhi, India, will have no effect on transit in Suez Canal in Egypt. This was stated by the presidential advisor of the Suez Canal, Admiral Mohab Mamish, which diminished the impact of this corridor on the Suez Canal.

“The corridor is multimodal as it includes the transport of goods by sea, land and rail, in a very expensive operation that cannot be compared to the Suez Canal,” Mamish said on a television program last night, adding that “this will have no impact on transit through the Suez Canal, particularly after the canal's doubling in 2015.”

“There is no alternative to the Suez Canal, because it is the fastest waterway for maritime transport, as the crossing between the Mediterranean and the Red Sea takes only 11 hours through the Suez Canal,” he said. However, Mamish said: “We have to be prepared for any competitiveness. We are able to compete adequately."
