In the city of Derna alone, in eastern Libya, over 5.200 people died following the passage of the sub-tropical cyclone "Daniel". This was reported by a medical source from the Libyan Ambulance and Emergency Service to “Nova Agency”. The search for thousands of missing people is still underway. Previously, Libyan authorities estimated that the toll could worsen, reaching 10.000 dead and 100.000 missing. The head of the Libyan Government of National Unity (Gun), Abdelhamid Dabaiba, proclaimed a three-day mourning period and decided to fly the flag at half-mast throughout Libya to honor the more than two thousand people who died in the cyclone. During the rescue operations in Cyrenaica, three also died volunteers. She reported it there International Federation of National Societies di Red Cross need Red Crescent (Ficr).

The situation is particularly serious in the city of Derna, 250 kilometers east of Benghazi and over 880 kilometers east of Tripoli where more than 300 bodies were buried in the city. The Ambulance and emergency service he is unable to contact his rescue teams in the eastern city due to an interruption in the internet and telephone networks and reported that most of the operations "are carried out with the help of citizens".

“The city of Derna, in Cyrenaica, the eastern region of Libya, has become uninhabitable and is very likely to be evacuated,” said the Aviation Minister of the Government of National Stability (GSN, the executive in power in the east of country), Hisham Abu Shkiwat, to the Qatari-owned pan-Arab broadcaster “Al Jazeera”.

Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, learned with pain of the extensive damage caused by Hurricane Daniel which hit the eastern part of Libya causing death, injuries and destruction. Italy - we read in a note from Palazzo Chigi - expresses all its closeness and solidarity to the families of the victims and to the Libyan people and has activated the Civil Protection to be able to assist Libya affected by this emergency in the best possible way.

According to what 'Agenzia Nova' learned, the Libyan city is completely isolated and unreachable. It is not possible to enter or leave the city because the roads are blocked. The Internet and telephone networks - both fixed and mobile - are interrupted. Furthermore, the images of the floods broadcast by Libyan television and social network users are impressive and show torrents of brown water submerging entire neighborhoods of the Libyan municipality located on the coast, not far from the border with Egypt.

The high number of victims, explains the spokesperson of the Libyan National Army (ENL), Ahmed Al Mismari, is due to the collapse of two dams south of Derna, which in turn caused the collapse of all the city's bridges and the complete flooding of entire neighborhoods of the city.

The Minister of Air Transport and member of the crisis commission of the so-called Government of National Stability of Libya (GSN, the executive in power in the east of the country), Hisham Abu Shkewat, asked all friendly countries and in particular Italy for "urgent help". The minister himself reported this in some statements released to "Agenzia Nova". “The eastern region of Libya was hit by an unprecedented storm which caused damage in several cities, including Al Bayda e Al Marj, but what happened in Derna represents a humanitarian catastrophe in all respects,” explained the minister. Even the head of the Presidential Council, Mohamed Al-Menfi, sent a distress call to countries and international organizations to provide assistance and support to the affected areas. Meanwhile, the Libyan state oil corporation, National Oil Corporation, has announced that the international oil companies operating in Libya, including Eni, have given full availability to help the areas affected by Cyclone Daniel. The Italian embassy in Tripoli expressed condolences for the victims caused by the cyclone.
