The Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology of Taiwan (NCSIST) today tested a missile capable of hitting targets inside the in China continental. This was announced by the "South China Morning Post" newspaper, according to which the same institute has also announced that it has started a collaboration with civilian companies on the island to develop five different types of drone capable of enhancing the reconnaissance capacity of the armed forces .
The news comes in a context of very high tensions along the Strait, with Beijing which has intensified naval and air activities around the island in recent months. The missile tested today took off from the Jiupeng base on Pingtung Island (south of Taiwan) at around 9:10 in the morning. According to local media, it is a new Hsiung Sheng cruise missile, which left a clear trail of smoke as it passed.
Enhanced version of Hsiung Feng IIE, the projectile would be able to hit targets 1.200 kilometers away, a range sufficient to hit cities such as Qingdao, on China's east coast, or Wuhan, in the center of the country.
