A contract professional of the US military was killed and five US soldiers were injured yesterday in Syria, following an attack launched by a drone of suspected Iranian origin against an anti-ISIS coalition base near Hasakah. This was announced by the department of US defense. The attack was launched around 14 pm yesterday (local time). According to a Pentagon memo, two of the five wounded US servicemen received treatment on the spot, while three were evacuated to Iraq.
The US Secretary of Defense, Lloyd Austin, reportedly authorized the conduct of precision airstrikes “against facilities used by groups affiliated with the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in eastern Syria”. The attacks "were launched in response to today's attack and a series of recent attacks against coalition forces in Syria by IRGC-affiliated groups," the secretary added. In a statement, the Pentagon said the US air strikes "are aimed at protecting and defending US personnel".
