Representatives of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) have urged Greens and the Liberal Democratic Party (FDP) to leave the federal government, in the face of disagreements with the German Social Democratic Party (SPD) on politics for Ukraine. Interviewed by the newspaper “Bild”, Thorsten Free, deputy of the Cdu in the Bundestag, invited ecologists and liberal democrats to "finally act accordingly and seek a new beginning in changed circumstances". According to Frei, Verdi and FDP could form a new executive, led by the Popular Party, with the CDU and the Christian Social Union (CSU): "In any case, we are ready to assume responsibility", added the exponent of the Union Christian Democrat.

In particular, Frei referred to the disagreements in the majority on sending Leopard tanks to Ukraine, which is busy repelling the Russian invasion. While the SpD hesitates, Verdi and Fdp are in favour. In this regard, the CDU deputy compared "the scenes that are currently unfolding" in the federal government on the issue to "divorce proceedings".

He also urged ecologists and liberal democrats to break with the alliance with the SpD Norbert Roettgen, CDU deputy in the Bundestag, where he chaired the Foreign Affairs commission from 2014 to 2021. Interviewed by "Bild", Roettgen declared that the Greens and the FDP "must ask themselves whether they are ready for the responsibility for this failure against their own convictions". According to Roettgen, the policy of the social democratic chancellor Olaf Scholz and his entire party means that "Germany is failing on a crucial point in the historical test of war in Europe".
