Rheinmetall, a German defense industry company, plans to build the first armored vehicles in Ukraine from the summer of 2024. This was stated by the company's CEO, Armin Papperger, in an interview with the weekly "WirtschaftsWoche". Counting on a quick signing of the relevant contract, the first Fuchs armored transport vehicles could be built by the end of summer next year, i.e. six to seven months after signing, the Rheinmetall CEO explained.
The first Lynx vehicles, however, could be built in Ukraine from 2025, "twelve-thirteen months" after the signing of the contract. The first ten Lynx armored fighting vehicles are currently in production in Germany and Hungary. However, Papperger continued, “after a ramp-up phase, we will quickly be in a position to produce a significant number entirely in Ukraine”. Regarding the safety of production facilities in the invaded country, the CEO clarified that Rheimetall is not "building new factories" but rather "will lease existing factories, reconvert them (to the production of the aforementioned vehicles) and manage them". These establishments "seem to be quite well protected", he added, recalling the experience of these two years of war.
