At least 14 people died in the earthquake that hit the southern coastal area of Ecuador. Another 381 people were injured. The earthquake, measuring 6,9, occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers off the coast of the city of Balao, in the province of Guayas, and was also felt in northern Peru. The authorities have not issued tsunami warnings.
Most of the victims occurred in the southern province of El Oro. The earthquake destroyed at least 44 homes, while another 90 were damaged. About 50 schools and 30 health centers were also affected, while several roads were blocked by landslides caused by the earthquake. “We remain in the area to check the damage caused by the earthquake. I want to say that I am with you and express my solidarity and my commitment to the victims,” Ecuadorian President Guillermo Lasso said in a tweet.
