The judicial authorities of China they should decide soon whether to formalize the arrest of a businessman Japanese detained since last May in Beijing, and suspected of espionage. This was reported by diplomatic sources cited by the "Kyodo" news agency, according to which Tokyo was recently informed by the Chinese government that the entrepreneur was subjected to "criminal detention", a maximum period of 37 days within which it will be established whether to decree formal arrest under Chinese law.
The Japanese citizen under arrest since the beginning of March is an employee of the pharmaceutical company Astellas Pharma. In recent months, the Tokyo government has repeatedly called for the man's release in a context of growing diplomatic tension between the two Asian powers. According to Kyodo, with this case at least 17 Japanese citizens have been detained in China since 2015 on suspicion of espionage activities.
